Strategic Disengagement

Strategic Disengagement

Engaging with an emotional situation takes attention, time, and energy. Sometimes that pays off. The conversation gets somewhere, the conflict resolves, and the relationship comes out better than it was. Other times, nothing changes, no matter how much goes into it. The other person will not listen. The argument has no end. Engaging still looks like the responsible choice, so you engage. Disengagement is choosing not to engage at all. That choice looks like avoidance from the outside and can feel like avoidance from the inside, which is what makes the two so hard to separate. Avoidance is not engaging because engaging would be uncomfortable. Disengagement is not engaging because engaging would change nothing. This course teaches you to tell the two apart in yourself and to decide what you engage with.

How to use this course

One lesson per day works best. Each lesson is complete on its own.

Use your own thoughts, reactions, and beliefs. This course works with real material.

You don’t need to finish everything. Take what’s useful and leave the rest.

The goal is independence. When the skill holds on its own, you’re done.
